Somloi Vandor Furmint Oregtokek 2023
Kis Tamás is making small-production, native grape wines from his organic 8-hectare property on Somló. Somló is Hungary’s smallest and most distinctive appellation. Its soils, rich in black basalt and other volcanic minerals, give the wines a distinctive smoky quality. The 2023 Öregtőkék (old vine) Furmint comes from vines that are 75 years old, on the south side of Somló hill. The wine was spontaneously fermented and aged in new and used 200 and 500 L Hungarian and French oak for 8 months. Rich and expansive, round and rich, with golden apples, green herbs and salty finish. Varietals: 100% Furmint. Soil and estate: This wine is made from grapes hailing from 75-year-old vines in the Grófi dűlő, on the southern slope of Somló hill. Tomi describes the vineyard as old and magical, giving wines with extreme length and structure. The soil on Somló is black basalt-rich loess with clay and sand. All of the vineyards are certified organic, with no pesticides or herbicides used. Fermentation: After destemming and a quick press in an open basket, the wine was spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in new and used 200-500 L Hungarian and French oak barrels. There was no temperature control, and fermentation and aging occurred on the lees. Aging: Aged on the lees for 8 months in new (25%) and used (750%) 200 and 500 L selected Hungarian and French oak barrels. Other details: Unfiltered and unfined. Low sulfites added.
