Grape Blaufränkisch
Producer Gut Oggau (Eduard & Stephanie Tscheppe)
Region Neusiedler See, Burgenland, Austria
Vintage 2022
Farming Biodynamic, 13 hectares
Style Serious, structured Austrian red

Bertholdi is an elder of the Gut Oggau family — one of the older, more serious characters in Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe’s extended wine family, where each cuvee carries a portrait and a personality. From their 13-hectare biodynamic estate on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Bertholdi is Blaufränkisch: Austria’s great red grape, known for its high natural acidity, dark fruit, and the specific spicy, peppery character of Burgenland terroir.

Tasting Notes

Characterful and serious. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, pepper, and the mineral depth that Burgenland’s limestone and gravel soils produce. High natural acidity gives the wine freshness and longevity. Structured tannins that need food and benefit from air.

How to Serve

Decant 30–45 minutes. Serve at 17–18°C. A wine for serious occasions.

Food Pairing

Roast lamb, venison, duck, wild boar, aged hard cheese. Austrian and Central European game cuisine.
