Christian Tschida (pronounced like cheetah) has the great fortune to cultivate 10 hectares of old vines that have been in his family for 4 generations since the 19th century. The winery is located in the Neusiedler See part of Burgenland, the easternmost point of Austria, more traditionally known for red and sweet wine production. The vineyards consist of sandy gravel, schist and limestone, all enjoying a moderating influence from the large nearby Lake Neusiedl.
Tschida takes a hands-off approach: the wines spend a great deal of time in barrel in contact with oxygen — some for as many as 5 years before bottling. He ferments all his wines in closed-top tanks outside in the shade, where the grapes are foot-stomped, then the juice moves inside to barrel for aging. Many receive zero sulfur additions.
Tasting Notes
A wine that reflects five years of patient barrel aging and the specific character of old Burgenland vines. Complex, oxidatively deep, with the mineral specificity of sandy gravel and schist soils. Among the most serious natural white wines in Austria.
How to Serve
