Plavac Mali is the primary indigenous red grape of the Dalmatian coast — the “blue” grape, as its name translates, grown on the sun-scorched limestone cliffs above the Adriatic. It is also genetically linked to Zinfandel, which tells you everything you need to know about the kind of wine it makes: dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and a natural energy that makes it irresistible at the table.
No winemaker stands out more in this tradition than Niko Bura, whose family has one of the longest winemaking histories in Croatia, spanning sixteen generations in Dingač since 1410. The Bura name is synonymous with Dingač — the first Croatian wine to receive protected designation of origin, grown on 45-degree limestone slopes so steep the harvest must be done entirely by hand.
About This Wine
The Plavac Fresh is Niko’s lighter, more approachable expression — designed to be drunk young and often. It’s bottled just four months after harvest, following fermentation in stainless steel, which preserves all the grape’s natural freshness and bright fruit character. No oak. Minimal intervention. Made to be opened, not cellared.
It is a fruit-forward wine without being sweet, and rich without being heavy. Flavors are vibrant tart berries and pomegranate, with juicy tannins and a clean, refreshing finish. Think of it as Croatia’s answer to a great chillable red.
How to Serve
Serve lightly chilled — 30 minutes in the fridge or 15 minutes in an ice bucket. This is the wine for a warm afternoon, a table covered in food, and people who want to keep pouring.
Food Pairing
Perfect with grilled fish, octopus salad, lamb, prosciutto, hard cheese, and pizza. The classic Dalmatian pairing of Plavac Mali with grilled seafood is one of the great regional combinations in the wine world.
